About the exhibition
Featuring a selection of 42 pictures by American photographers Jamie Diamond and Elena Dorfman, the new project ‘Surrogates. An Ideal Love’ hosted in the spaces of Fondazione Prada – Osservatorio, explores the concepts of romantic, erotic and family love. Both artists have focused their studies through images on a specific and unusual aspect of the universal theme of love: the emotional bond between a man or a woman and the artificial version of human beings, be it reborn or silicone dolls.
The exhibition into more details
Following the two artists’ studies, the exhibition is focused on two core themes: the relationship between a potential mother and her doll-son and the one between men or women with their silicone doll partner.
Through the two exhibitions Forever Mothers (2012-2018) and Nine Months of Reborning, Jamie Diamond analyses the approach and attitude of women with a strong desire for maternity and the way they satisfy their need by crafting by hand highly-real dolls (also known as reborn dolls) which are treated and considered as real children.
Conversely, the Still Love series (2001-04) by Elena Dorfman is focused on people sharing their daily domestic life with realistic human-size erotic dolls. Highly-impactful images help visitors re-consider their traditional vision of love and reflect on the value of a lifeless object in the substitution of a real person, be it a daily life or sexual partner, as well as a friend.
