Drinking wine is a must, but producing it is what is really cool…

Wine is luckly one of the few business that can’t be delocalized: expecially in France and Italy, wines are strictly linked to the place where the vineyards grow, where the grapes are harvested and where they are transformed.
So for example, if you want to produce Brunello, you have to come to Montalcino.
The American family Mariani knows that very well: they founded in the ‘70 Castello Banfi, one of the main winery for the production of Brunello. And this is know also by Constellation Brands that bought the winery Ruffino to have their own Chianti.
Many foreign investors are interested in Italian vineyards: Gancia, an historical sparkling wine producer in Piedmont, is now property of Russian Standard Corporation, an investment fund, and Argiano, in Montalcino, was bought by Andrè Santos Esteves, a Brazilian businessman.

VIPs and Wine

Not only for profit, some VIPs decided to invest in the “Italian land” maybe just to have a nice holiday house where to relax but then they got the wine fever.

Mick Hucknall, singer of Simply Red, produces a red wine on the Etna Volcano in Sicily, and in the same region Carole Bouquet, a french actress, felt in love with the Passito of Pantelleria (a sweet white wine).

Richard Gere was so surprised by Brunello di Montalcino “Le Lucére” of Tenuta San Filippo that he asked for few thousands bottle of vintage 2007 with his private label Bedford Post wine, named after his Relais & Chateux property in New York.

Drew Barrymore is a Pinot Grigio fan, importing it with her name directly from the North East of Italy while Joe Bastianich and the mother Lidia produce in the close region of Friuli Venezia Giulia.

The English singer Sting has his own estate in Figline Valdarno and he called his Chianti “When we dance”.
And in Tuscany there is even an American pornostar producing Brunello: Savanna Samsong.
