The Museo del Design Italiano, located in the heart of Milan’s Triennale, has been given a makeover and has been enriched by a brand-new exhibition conceived to anticipate the upcoming Supersalone (the new name for Salone del Mobile.Milano).
For the new setting, contents and insights have been expanded to better highlight the precious heritage of the Triennale Archives and the network of donations and loans has been consolidated. Moreover, the layout of texts and apparatus has been re-designed to allow the utmost off accessibility and to make the narration of Italian design open and inclusive.
The new additions include the FIAT Nuova 500 D runabout from 1960 by Dante Giacosa, displayed alongside photographs, advertising campaigns, original packaging, graphic materials, posters and wood models.
New items and captions located on the boundary walls tell the story of the Triennale, which in 2023 will celebrate its 100th anniversary, of the International Exhibitions and of the exhibitions in which some of the exhibits have been featured, like the Mostra dell’industrial design (exhibition of Industrial Design) held in 1954 and curated by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni.
New captions for the objects on display provide insightful highlights on historical periods, exhibitions and particularly significant moments in the history of design related to the institution, while a tight collaboration with artists and designers has resulted in the creation of themed focuses. The focuses are dedicated to creations by masters like Ponti, Sottsass, Mari, Crippa, Scanavino, Dorazio, Sambonet, Munari, Melotti and Colombo for the 10th and 11th Triennale, as well as to graphic design and to the history of Salone del Mobile.Milano.
Just to celebrate the history of the Salone del Mobile, during the Supersalone 2021, the museum hosts a new exhibition reporting on the cultural productions of the Salone del Mobile in the city.
